Super Smash Bros.

They smashed.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie destroyed the box office this weekend. You can read all about the records it broke in the first link below, but the short of it is that it out performed the expectations of all the critics who touted the idea from early in production that the film’s voice over performances are or would somehow be racist or insensitive to the Italian characters. Well, the numbers are in and general audiences have decided this is a non-issue for them. In fact, this just may be integral to the movie’s success. Compared to recent "family friendly” offerings from Disney, our guess is that Mario Bros. massive box office performance is directly correlated with the fact that audiences have been starved for a good family fun adventure that steers clear of any and all political commentary. Indeed, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is decidedly not “woke” or “anti woke”; it’s just an attempt at a good, fun, animated adventure for the family and young audiences.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is also in theaters, still carrying strongly in it’s third weekend at the box office. So far, it’s accumulated $270 million worldwide on a budget of around $100 million.

Air debuted Wednesday alongside Mario to a lackluster $31 million six day total. Unless it has legs at the box office, it will likely be a financial loss for Amazon Studios.

Dungeons & Dragons is also in a difficult position, dropping to fourth position in it’s second week in theaters. It’s accumulated only $125 million on a budget of $150 million.
