& Evil Dead Rise Scares Off Other Debuts
The Super Mario Bros. Movie has held off all contenders for three weekends now. It has now passed $875 million worldwide and is predicted to cross $1 billion this week. Evil Dead Rise surprised a bit with a weekend debut of $42 million worldwide. The supernatural horror story had a budget of $19, which means that this one is likely already in the green.
Looks pretty scary if you ask us!
Neither Guy Ritchieâs The Covenant or Ari Asterâs Beau is Afraid received the debuts they had hoped for. The Covenant did scrounge its way to the third spot, but Evil Dead Rise scared off any chances of it stealing second.
The interesting question now as it seems is whether either of these two films will make any money. Ritchieâs war thriller was poised to fill the empty slot for an adult-aimed drama. Right now, itâs done $6.3 million. The budget, however, was reportedly $55 million, so unless it stirs up a lot of awards buzz after this first weekend, itâs doubtful it will surpass that number sufficiently to payback the ad spend for the movie. Asterâs Joaquin Phoenix-led film, is in perhaps a tougher situation, only having brought in $3.5 million on less than half the screens and with a budget of $35 million.
